We read the immobiliser or decode the door lock at the vehicle to recover the key code, cut a fresh blade to that code, and programme a new transponder and remote to the car. It takes longer than cutting a spare, because the security data has to be read first, but it is still normally done inside the hour and without the car ever leaving where it is parked.
Older Hondas: Keys the Dealer Will No Longer Cut
This is the call we take most often on Honda. An owner rings a main dealer about a key for a 2004 Jazz, a first-generation CR-V or an Accord, and is told the vehicle is too old, the key is no longer available, or that the car will need to go in on a transporter. None of that is true from our side of the job.
An older Honda uses a straightforward transponder key, and a straightforward transponder key is one of the easier and cheaper things we cut. We source the correct blank, cut the blade from the vehicle's own lock data, and programme the chip to the immobiliser at the roadside. The age of the car is not the obstacle it is made out to be, and in most cases a key for a fifteen-year-old Honda costs less than one for a new one.
Two related faults come with age and are worth naming, because owners often misread them as a failing key. The first is an ignition barrel that has worn in step with the key, so the car will only start if you jiggle or lift the key. The second is a key blade that has worn thin enough to snap, usually in the door lock on a cold morning. Honda Smart Entry and Keyless Fobs
Newer Hondas such as the Civic, CR-V, HR-V, ZR-V, Jazz and Honda e use Smart Entry keyless access and push-button start rather than a conventional key. When one of those fobs fails, the symptoms are different to a worn blade:
- The car reports that the key is not detected even with the fob in your pocket, most often a flat fob battery.
- Smart Entry works intermittently, or only when the fob is held against the start button.
- Buttons that need a firm press, caused by worn contacts under the rubber pad rather than a failed fob.
- A cracked or split case, usually after a drop, letting moisture reach the board.
- The immobiliser light staying lit after starting, or the engine firing and immediately cutting out.
- The emergency blade hidden inside the fob no longer turning in the driver's door lock.
